Friday Weigh In

The blip from last week is gone as well as another .2.

I'm going to let you in on a secret that has REALLY helped me: my calendar. This little piece of paper has been an extremely effective weapon against scale-angst. This is what I track and why it helps:

*the scale numbers. Similar to a graph, every time I look at it, I can see how far I've come over the the past weeks and month. It's an easy way to keep track of meeting goals.

*my workouts. Did I do weights one week really hard and not see a loss? Well duh. And I ran a 10K two weeks ago! go me. It really helps me plan out and see what I've done. This week I ran 13 miles (so far), that's a bit more satisfying than saying, "I worked out every day this week." I think it's a more concrete quantity that I can be proud of.

*BY FAR, the most important thing I track I do with this little red x.

What does tracking my cycle have to do with scale zen? EVERYTHING. I see that red x and suddenly the out-of-nowhere extra pounds that I'm freaking out about are no longer an issue. I know that I'm going to be a little crazy-pathological that week so I just know in the back of my head I'll be back mentally in a couple of days. So I don't go overboard and mess up the rest of the hard work from last week....usually.

So People.
and by "people" I mean ladies. Last week was a red X weigh in. This week it's gone. If you don't have some visceral method of tracking your T.O.M, I highly recommend it.

*I keep my list of meals by my fridge but I'm sure a calender like this would be useful in some sort of meal-planning way too. I just keep mine as simple as possible so it's really easy to just glance at and see what I need to.

Here is a site where you can quickly print one off: monthly calendars.

Now, here's the last video to finish up video week. I had to watch it twice before I really liked it.

Have a great weekend!

I Love You Mr. Miyagi

I'm 27, he's 16.

He's Italian, I'm not.

He's not trying to lose weight; he's just trying to beat Johnny in the big fight.

He's got a girlfriend from the other side of the tracks. I have a husband...and three kids.

But I swear- every time I watch this I AM DANIEL LARUSSO.

(fyi: it's about 5 minutes long)

(For those of you not here yesterday and wondering about the random Karate Kid clip It's video week on Sister Skinny)

Starting... Now!

Despite the week being half-over, I am officially declaring this video week on Sister Skinny.
(I'm being held against my will by a fleet of sick people who claim to be my family...send help...)

Apologies if you hate videos, or can't watch them because you're at work or whatever, or don't have time.

You are totally missing out.

My better is definitely better than someone's better...

...somewhere. Maybe in a nursing home...or maternity ward.

Incidentally, the song is going into my workout playlist and can be found here:
Saul Williams - Saul Williams - List of Demands (Reparations)

"Held Hostage" Ab Workout

This is how it started. The baby was sitting on me and I was singing the "Eentsy Weentsy Spider" (I know, some people say "itsy bitsy" we're "eentsy weensty" people), to him while he was bobbing up and down on my stomach. Well, after a couple of "bobs," I realized my stomach was getting quite a little workout because I had to contract my muscles before he came crash landing down on all of my organs. Good times...
Until they ganged up on me. I don't know why I'm laughing. Because for some reason it was utterly hysterical? Mutiny maybe? They really could overtake me if they wanted to...

My abs are already sore. But I'm not sure if it's bruised-sore or muscle-sore.

Is It Me or Is It Just Europe?

I love this commercial, and I don't.

Let's celebrate women who don't look like Sports Illustrated models. YAY! There's one giant step for women's self esteem. THen again, even with all of these women's "differences" don't they still all kind of look pretty naturally beautiful? (Or maybe just from using Dove products...I mean, they DID all have great skin...)

Maybe I'm being a tad oversensitive or maybe it's just a European thing....but it starts out saying, "Dove believes that every woman has her own beauty," and feels more like, "Dove believes that every woman [who is beautiful] has her own beauty."

What do you think? Love it? Or a little bothered by it?

Four For the Price of One

Life Sans Scale

I've been walking around for the last couple of days desperately trying to find ways to gauge my body's progress without numbers. Do you remember that Seinfeld episode where George's pants swoosh? I feel like I'm walking around like George, going, "What's that noise?" But it's more like: "What was that? Are my thighs closer together than they were yesterday?"

or, "I can't remember...was that roll there before?" RIDICULOUS!
And although I haven't made my mind up for sure, I do think I'll let him out of the closet on Friday for a quickie weigh.

Biggest Loser

Phil's Gone. Waaaaaaa! Who am I suppose to root for now? I loved Jerry, Patty, and Phil. Uhh, Go Bob!

Who is your fav?

For the Ab Haters:

More plank! (Please remember, I am NO trainer, don't know jack about form, and am not certified in any way to be doling out exercise advice.)
video
(FYI: I'm using a paper towel under my feet.) Anyone else have some crazy planks they'd like to tell us all about? Leave a comment! Or better yet, send us a picture! The email link is in the sidebar)

Random FYI:

We've got dear friends staying with us right now, and so I have been (and will be) away from my computer for a few days. Sorry if I get behind in bloggy visits and email, I sneak them in when possible! Pictures if my Star Wars brood will be posted in the next couple of days. For those of you who care (family), and those of you who are nice enough to humor me (Crabby, and Randi) I'm hoping to finish them by Saturday.

Size Six Impostors

The other day I tried on two pairs of jeans at Banana Republic. Remember, I need new goal jeans? (btw- I have some now. I just don't own them). But NOT from the Banana. Nosireeebob. Because in the dressing room I had a couple of pairs of 6's as well as the size 8's I was wearing. My SMALLEST 8's I might add. Can you see where this is going? Yup. The 6's were big on me. Stupid vanity sizing.

So maybe I should change the tagline on our blog:

two sisters, one mission: to fit into what a size 6 was oh...about five years ago
-or-
two sisters, one mission. We'll let you know what it is when we figure it out.
-or-
2, 4, 6, 8! Who don't we appreciate: Devious Clothing Marketers!

How do you know what size you actually are? Do you even care? Any of you tag-cutter-outers out there?

Help!

Weigh in and Other Goodies

And I'm ecstatic. I had a couple of days this week where I just really didn't want to go to the gym, but went anyway. This week I'm going to try structure my eating a little better and do some interval training (it takes less time and has helped me in the past break through "walls" with my weight loss). So there you go. How'd the racing ladies do? Anyone have good news to report?

Now onto the goodies:

I'm a sap. I almost cried when I watched this teaser.

Can't Wait!

Also, Jessica's Wednesday post over at Weight of My World was fantastic. You may as well go read the entire post, "Motivational Musings;" it's full of wisdom and motivational medicine. But I still wanted to include two of my favorite parts here:

6) Food and exercise: find what works for you. Not a morning person? Fine -- exercise over you lunch hour or after work, or even at 8 PM! Can't get off the sofa after work? Get up 30 minute early and go for a brisk walk. Don't like running? Walk. Don't like walking? Bike. Don't like exercising alone? Join a class. TRY something new. Same goes for food -- find a few breakfasts and lunches that are healthy and easy to prepare that you ENJOY eating -- no sense forcing down smoothies if you hate them, or eggs if they make you gag. Alternate between a few different breakfasts (I have about 3 that I alternate between). If you can start the day off on a great foot, food-wise... with a healthy breakfast -- the tone for you day is pretty much set. If you can add a healthy lunch on there, even better. Plan a few healthy snacks (one at 10 AM, one at 3 PM is what works for me). Don't ever let yourself get to that point of hunger where you are clawing your way through the cupboard, shoving things in your mouth. Your hunger will outweigh your reason EVERY time. Not a day goes by that I don't start my day off with SOME sort of game plan for the day. I know I've got 3 meals and 1-2 snacks. I know that I need to drink my water, eat lots of fruits and veggies, and take my multi-vitamin. I know I should get in some healthy oil. I always at least have a game plan. Often on sundays I will make a big dish that I can eat all week -- a chicken cous cous salad, for example, or a pot of gazpacho -- something I enjoy, that is healthy, and that I don't have to put a lot of thought into.

7) The best piece of advice that I can ever give people is not to get caught up in timelines. Don't set date-based weight loss goals for yourself. What's the point!? I mean, it's great to think "oh, I've got that high school reunion that I want to look great for," if that's what gets you STARTED, but in order to maintain the hard work and discipline, it has to come from somewhere else -- a true desire to be healthy and feel great, not just the vanity of showing up on ONE day in a size 6 skirt. And if you don't make that date? WHO CARES! Every day that you do this you are better off than the day before. There is no end-game, no race to the finish line... it is all about living the healthiest and best life possible... there is no better reward than the way you will FEEL.

Thanks Jessica! Have a great weekend everyone!

The Pinata Has Broken Open

So take your pick of the goodies:

Otherwise known as random post, Wednesday edition.

1) I am in a race with Ms. Kelly. She's had a hard time breaking 130, I've had a hard time getting below 140. So the first one of us to make it to the next set of ten's (129.9, or 139.9), and can hold it for a week, wins.

I think we're neck n' neck. Although that may be because I just proposed this to her yesterday...

How bout you? Are you teetering? If you're on the brink of a set of 10's and want to join us, let us know. What does the winner get? Um...nothing. Well actually, that may be determined well into the race if it looks like I'm going to win.

2) Hunger attacked me yesterday...hard. I worked reeeally hard in my weights class yesterday; I was shaking after every set. It felt fantastic at the time to push myself but then around 4 pm, WHAMO! I was eating a graham cracker and some yogurt and out of nowhere this intense growly hunger snuck up on me and before I knew it I had motored through 8 crackers. I know, I know. Protein would've helped, but the graham crackers were right there! We don't keep many products around the house made by these guys,
but we do love our graham crackers. Not the most substantial filler-upper but they are just too easy to eat! (sigh). Too bad I wasn't sitting in front of a nice juicy bowl of broccoli or chicken breast.

3) Here are two more workout songs. I may get made fun of in a serious way for this first one It's ok, go ahead. (cringing)

 Song NameArtist
1
Bonnie Tyler
2
Jill Sobule

The second one is a little lesser known one, but very catchy.

4) Smiling, laughing...these things are good for us. Which is why I'm linking to Demitri Martin telling jokes. How's that for a stretch?
No really though, I laughed. More than once.

Hope you have a great day full of smart eating and sweaty exercise!

These are two songs that I resurrected from an old workout playlist:

2

2)Remember when I said I loved to lip-synch when I was on the Satan machine? This guy is pretty good too. This song is on my playlist and I always think of him when it comes on:

3)Found a swimsuit I really like. I decided to just thow it on and have my husband take a picture so you could see it. (insert: exaggerated wink)
Sorry, you can't actually click on THIS image to see more colors. It's at modbeclothing. But be warned: it's one of those sites that plays music and has an intro (that I haven't figured out how to skip) so if you're at work, hit mute.

4) My bloggy friends:
Hailey. For those of you who are new or forgot, she is my friend I met blogging but we actually attend the same gym and live about 2 miles away from each other. We still have not met and alas, were foiled again this morning. (sigh).
Lacy is doing a giveaway. Yay for FREE stuff! This time it's 20 4X6 free prints from Adray Camera. All you gotta do is go leave a comment for her on her giveaway post. (And, hey! As long as your commenting, come on back and say hi!)
Remember our awesome highlight Jessica? Well, all of her Health.com running articles can be found in one place. YAY!

That's it. I suppose I could've broken those up into smaller posts, but all of this stuff has been swirling around in my head. So, AH! I feel much better now; cleaner, stick-to-one-topic post coming soon.

Happy Father's Day

Weight loss takes a long time.

Ok, there. I said something completely relevant to the subject of our blog. And now, (even though I promised myself I would NEVER stray so far off topic) Dad and Aaron: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! I love you both.

An example of why I think Aaron is so special: He recorded this for me tonight just because he knows I love Kevin James:

Thank you Aaron.
