The Family That Runs Together...

gets in everybody's way.

We took the kids to the indoor track for a fun-filled family night of running chasing. We were there for 45 minutes and I think I maybe ran a whopping 2 miles. Several of those laps I was pushing a stroller, giving piggyback rides, and trying to keep the toddler from entering the sprint lane 2 seconds before someone would come whizzing by.
We had fun though.
And what are you supposed to do after a night of exercise with your family?

Get donuts of course!
And no, I didn't have one.

Chocolate, Donuts, Pizza...nah...

Remember my funny and thoughtful husband? The one who got me that broccoli for Valentines day and actually did yoga with me? Don't be deceived. He also brought home this the other night:

"What's the big deal?" you say. Just a big fat dark chocolate candy bar? Mmmhmm. Did I forget to mention THERE WERE FOUR OF THEM?

He swore up and down he'd hide them...that he'd only use them for baking...

Uh-HUH. That's why this one is OPENED.

Fortunately he saw my incredulous "WHY did you leave this hunka dark chocolate out on the counter in plain smell and sight?" look and whisked them away to a top secret locale. He's bragged every day about what an awesome hiding spot he found and no matter how hard I'd try- I'd never find them. What he doesn't realize is that if I wanted to find them I would. It's like a shark sensing blood in the water.

(he just came in and read this. "You won't find them.")

Whatever. I CAN'T find them because I don't WANT to find them.

Here are some more things I've passed on this week:
pizza (leftover from Monday): fed it to the crazy baby.

and no donut for me on our donut run (I tried my best to show very little):

And even after that I think the scale might show me a higher number than it did last week. But I really don't think I've actually gained weight. Water retention, lifting, TOM, whatever, I really don't care. It's been a hard week and I've done well.

Foods I Didn't Eat

Remember that? That whole section on our blog related to foods I passed up for the good of the goal? Don't feel bad, it's only a vague memory to me too.

Now I'm starting to notice again when I wanted to splurge but didn't. Whether it's a treat like a big ol fat piece of cake (pictured below), or eating my kid's crusts, or a handful of chocolate chips, or a second helping at dinner, I seemed to have lost track of the fact that when I am losing weight I say "no." A lot. I pass things up everyday. I really hadn't realized that because I was keeping a food journal and not gaining so everything seemed pretty ok. Before I recommitted to losing this last bit of weight, I would've definitely had some cake. Not a lot. Maybe a couple of bites and I would've written in down. That makes it ok right?

Sure! Except for the fact that those bites (combine with a couple of bites of honey nut cheerios, a couple of crusts here and there) add up in more ways than one. 1) I don't feel as full so I feel justified in eating more and 2) my tastes change ever so slightly and I start wanting more carby stuff. (this is different than a craving. A big fat real craving I might partake, but just for my daily sustenance, it just plain doesn't work.)

This past week I've done great. Lots (and I mean LOTS) of begetables, more protein, and more water. I feel differently too, less worn down and more in control. AND I did lose weight this week. I'm trying to have a more well-rounded approach and am still trying to figure out the best ways to measure, tape measure, body fat, scale, clothes, etc. So our Friday weigh-in's might be a less numbers, more evaluation...we'll see.

So here's the cake I said no to this week; I tried to keep it ambiguous enough in the picture as to not make any of you leave wanting some.

So hopefully there will be more of these "foods I didn't eat" posts. Keep in mind, my intention isn't to say, "look at my amazing willpower everyone!"; the fact is, once I decided to take a picture of it and post it, it doesn't go in my mouth. It's that simple.

Wondering where I was this morning? Oh don't worry, I was here:

Getting treats for my donut-loving three year old's preschool class.

"I'll take one dozen sprinkled donuts please."

"Ok. Will there be anything else?"

What I thought: "Yes. An old-fashioned blueberry, chocolate-iced cream filled, 3 glazed, one jelly-filled, and one old-fashioned devil's food please."

What came out: "Nope!"

And THIS remained untouched until it hit the trash:

*****UPDATE*****
The leftover donut in here
is now in hereSo don't worry folks. I will not be alarming my neighbors by jumping in headfirst to my garbage bin to search for my son's donut remains.

Today.

Food Diary on Steriods

Ok, so yesterday was not as bad as I thought it would be (not that great either though. Vegetables? What are those?). I attribute that to two things: 1) I was crazy busy every single minute yesterday. Seriously, I was lucky my teeth got brushed. 2) I forget the teeny little fact that Aaron was going to be out of town yesterday, so no weights class. -sob- I don't think my body was as hungry as it's been over the last couple of days.

Let's start off on a high note shall we?

I love staring at the 51% as I eat my sweetened honey clusters and flakes. 13 grams of fiber! This cereal is so weird though. The clusers taste so yummy it makes me suspicious. And the brown flakes? They are okay but taste remarkably like paper. In a good way. Like I said: weird.
I was tempted soon after by more cereal. I tend to take a bite or two when I'm feeding le bebe. It's whole milk. Ew. Who loves ingesting invisible fat grams in the form of MILK? Not I.

Now onto the Zone Bar. Perhaps the least exciting part of foody day, but I really like these things. They feel like a treat and have lots of protein so I usually try to time it so I can eat it soon after my pump class.
Ok. These are really good. Shredded chicken taco: I will be posting the recipe for this chicken later. It's moderately healthy (yes! There ARE veggies in there) and can be used in MANY different ways. Here's a little tip, I use the small side of my grater to grate my cheese. I end up using a third of the cheese I normally would but I still cover everything and get the taste. It melts easier too! Here's the inside (I know. The outside really does look better. Take my word for it. Oh-so-yummy):

I love the fact that I can wear a white shirt with three little boys and successfully make it through my day... until lunch. Moving right along to my mid-afternoon snack: Pineapple and cottage cheese. Perfect!! Until I got reeeally hungry 20 minutes later. I pulled out Aaron's rice Krispie treats and the fiber one box. Maybe it would've been a harder choice if I didn't ALSO crave the FiberOnes, heh heh. No Thank You Rice Krispie treats!

What? How did you get there?
So I did have a little bite of this forlorn little Rice Krispie treat leftover from one of my kids. But I did throw the rest away.

(Ok, this is where the pictures stop. They're taking too darn long to load.) I didn't actually have a real dinner mostly because it was just the kids and me. So we all had cereal. Frosted mini-wheats to be exact. It was very tasty. I also finished off a little bit of oatmeal leftover from the baby. No protein or veggies. I know, I know, no need to scold me.

Although it was not the best day nutrient-wise, it could've been a LOT worse. I've been mindlessly overeating over the past couple of days, and this really helped. I mean, I did have a conversation with an unopened bag of chocolate chips, and stared longingly at a half of a baby-eaten jello fruit cup and of course I didn't mention the knife n' peanut butter plague. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. A bag of mini candy bars mysteriously showed up at my door around 7:30. No Joke. So after a baby Almond Joy (almonds are healthy right?) I called it a day. Now I'm off to bed, I have to get up in a couple of hours for spin.

FYI, I might be doing this more, it's the easiest (and funnest) way to keep tabs on my eating. Happy Friday Everyone! Good luck on those weigh-in's!

I Love You, I Love You Not

I stared at this leftover Chocolate Bundt Cake for a long,

long,

long,

time last night. I thought of all sorts of circumstances to justify sampling a just a teeny bite before I went to bed . Such ramifications inlcluded: "I can afford it! I mean, I'm going to burn like a bazillion calories tomorrow in spin" (which I did thankyouverymuch), "I luuuurve chocolate," and of course, "You're my friend. I love you." Fortunately, my hand went for the kitchen drawer and pulled out this:

Extra Polar Ice Gum Saves the Day!!

Dino Buddies Anyone?

(Also known as :

Tuna, Why do I always forget you? -or-

Why Mothers Get Fat -or-

Most Massive Picture Post in the History of Blogdom)

Over the weekend I woke up and realized I was just eating too much and lots of the wrong food, (plus a lot of the right foods). It's not like I binged or even had a big "weak" moment. I just started to notice how much I was pick pick picking...at EVERYTHING. So for my own amusement, as previously metioned, I thought I'd just keep the camera handy and take a picture whenever I had the urge to just "pop" something in my mouth. Whether planned and at mealtime, or cleaning up the food off of the baby's high chair: *click!*

(Warning: Blogger is being flaky, perhaps due to my photo overload. Some pictures may not show up)

Ready, Set, Breakfasttime!
(I didn't get a picture of the Organic Raisin Bran I had for breakfast)
Here's the only thing I actually ate when I got home from the gym: (ahem. Not the baby)
But these things were tempting:
Hello graham crackers...sitting out of the cupboard...AND package.

Open containers, we won't even go there.

I was just about to pop that handful of raisins back before I grabbed the camera. Now I know, they're just raisins. But it adds up people!
And now on to Lunchtime. Absolutely the hardest time for me. It is impossible to make myself a healthy lunch amidst trying to feed the 3 little buggers (ages 5 , 3, and 1) It is also very RARE that I eat before they do. Which I think would be ideal considering it might cut back my appetite; instead I stand semi-hungry over this:
And am constantly running into little bits of things that seem to be magnetized to my tongue. I mean really, how else am I supposed to explain wanting to EAT any of this?
More little bits. Peach skins:

And here's the rest of a string cheese stick I broke into little bits for the youngling. How hard should it be to throw a two inch piece of cheese in the trash. Very hard apparently.

Ah, leftover kid-chewed Dino Buddies, my faaaaavorite!
Ooooh, This one was hard. This little eentsy bit of english muffin (for the youngling) broke off when I was getting it out of the toaster.
Did eat any of it? Not today my friend. Here is a picture of my REAL lunch after the kidlets are settled and noshing away. It's english muffin topped with hummus and sliced tomato. It was deelish. (And no it's not a whole wheat one, ours here are Gross and actually contain more calories. I don't care if it's healthier, I'm not spending extra calories on whole wheat anything)
With lunch over, the rest of the day went OK. I had some close calls with some Ritz, a misplaced (and thankfully) frozen brownie in the freezer, some bread the youngling was snacking on, and of course the graham crackers. How many times do I have to put those things away??

Here's my afternoon meal, Tuna n'tomato toast on whole wheat bread. I heart tuna! And I always forget about it. Protein, low calories, tasty.
Tuna, forgive me.
And yes I actually ate raw broccoli. Don't panic, there's a bowl of ranch you can't see in this picture. (yesss, low-cal) The fiber one bar I had around 4:30 and my din-din: Spaghetti, meatballs and peas.

Wow. Did you actually get all the way through that? So this was an eye opener for me. I just didn't realize how MUCH I had been nickel and diming my calories away.

I almost forgot, I don't think I would've made it through some of those rough spots (like making dinner) without my trusty repellent, Extra Polar Ice Gum.

So there you go! Are you appalled? Do you relate? Are you a food diary nazi? If not, how do check yourself?

Aaron, Puzzled: "You Don't Want...Any?"

An odd thing happened last night. Very odd.

Aaron, for those of you who don't know, loves to bake. If this were a recipe blog for fancy desserts, I'd be able to post yummy pictures and recipes for eons. But alas, it's not.

So anyway, last night he made this lovely fruit tart (sincerest apologies if any readers have been fighting off fruit tart cravings for months):

And the strangest thing happened in my brain. It said, "Katie, I don't think you wan't any of that."

Me: "Really?"
Brain: "Well, are you hungry?"
Me: "Um, no."
Brain: "Are you having a die-hard craving for a fruit tart tonight?"
Me: "Nooo." (I could start to see the logic...)
Brain: "Then it's settled. Just don't have any, or, just a bite to let Aaron know how yummy it is"
Me: "Okay."

I had a bite. One small bite, that's it.
It felt odd. Really. Here was this delicious just-out-of-the-oven confection and - I'm sorry, can we review - I actually felt like I didn't really want it? No willpower, no deprivation, just no desire. Whaaaaa?

Lest we think that I have conquered all of my eating issues, I must say, as skilled Aaron is, there is a part of me deep down that knows fruit is still fruit. Dress it up all you want; it'll never be chocolate. So maybe it didn't seem as "treaty" to me, I don't know and don't care if it was a full moon that caused this abnormal behavior, it was... liberating.

Bits and Pieces

Well, here's another random post, Thursday edition.

1) So I was feeling pretty inspired from Lorie and was thinking how great it'll be when I can post some tangible photo progress. While we're all waiting for that, I thought I'd post a mini-development picture. And I do mean mini. Behold the arm definition:

What? You don't see it? Lemme help you out.

Oddly, I have three perfectly aligned freckles on this part of my arm. I hadn't noticed that until I looked at these pictures. Do you see them? Ok, good. Now look a little to the left of the one on the bottom. ...a little mooore...THERE! See it? The itty bitty concave-ness?

No?

Try backing up from your computer screen about 10 inches.

Do you see it now?

Well it IS there. It's just hard to take a picture of your own arm at that angle.

2) If any of you are wondering where Molly went she's off on another mini-vacay with her family. This time though she's going to try to post from her destination (that would be a sister-in-law's house). We'll see.

3) Considering recent motivational lags, I am determined to actually lose weight before weigh-in tomorrow. And so I thought I'd share my latest pass-up. We went out last night for treats with some friends of ours, and I didn't eat this (Note: as I was looking at that picture I found myself wanting one reeeally bad so I decided to just put the blurry version in to give you the idea of and ice-cream cookie sandwich. I surely don't want to induce cravings in any of our readers!):

Guiltless Fourth

Hi everyone, I hope you all had super funtastic Independence Day, and for our foreign friends, I hope your Wednesday was spectacular! I'm just posting quickly about my small victory yesterday: I didn't overeat! I didn't go to bed feeling sick. yay!!! I always tend to stuff my face around holidays thinking, ok, I'll fix this tomorrow or next week, etc. But his time I ate, enjoyed the food, didn't go back for second's or thirds, and then stopped! We cleared the table and that was that. There's a part of my brain that thinks if I'm going to enjoy this "treat", I've got to go overboard and stuff my face. But not this time, and given the recent lag in motivation I'm feeling very energized.
And, tomorrow's weigh-in. I'm not exactly looking forward to it, but not dreading it, like I normally am in a holiday week. If anything, THIS will have kept me from losing:

PB and J crusts left over from the kids. I can hear you through computer, "Wow Katie, how do you ever say no to those? You must have a willpower of steel to turn those puppies down." I know, they are not the most appetizing of deterrants, but they are a major weakness of mine nonetheless. I've really been trying this week to NOT just pop these in my mouth when we're cleaning up.
So, we'll see, I haven't gotten on the scale in a couple of days; my fingers are crossed.

Stopped at One

Guess how much weight I'm going to lose at the next weigh in? I'll give you a hint:

Just kidding!... kind of. Yesterday the baker (aka Aaron) made these delicious homeade doughnuts. What is a girl to do? It was Father's Day for pete's sake! Although I did have one, I ONLY had one. not five. That was hard. As I read that back I think OINK! but it really was difficult to tell myself one was enough especially with all 16 of them just sitting in front of me. So, victory. We gave most of the them away to friends, Aaron put the rest away and... ta-da! I survived!

Costco Pizza and Helpful Websites

Have you ever had a bite of Costco pizza? It is so wonderful looking with the cheese dripping off. My friend warned me because she wasn't warned and succumbed to her inner temptations - 19 points a slice! I had to go to Costco today with my kids. I had to walk by the pizza. So I bought a package of the Fudge bars that are one point each and we all ate them as we walked by the pizza station. I felt like I was getting in the pizza's face saying, "take that you evil 19 point temptation! I WON!" When I told my kids sorry, no pizza because there was 19 points, they couldn't believe it!

Today, I thought I would share with you some sites that might help you with recipes or eating out.
Weight Watchers: You don't have to be a online member. There are alot of recipes on there. Also, in the forums people post different recipes.
Light and Tasty: This site you can specify lower in fat recipes with nutritional info added. That way, if you are a WW member, you can figure out your points.
Dotti's Weight Loss Zone If you click on restaurants, it will take you to most chain restuarants and give you the WW points value for their food. It has really helped me with date nights. PF Changs and Chili's. Those great Lettuce wraps? 11.5 pts for your appetizer!
3 Fat Chicks: Look under food and then recipes, you now have just about 1000 recipes with nutrionnal values at your fingertips. One thing I like is that readers can put their votes in. 5 eggs getting the highest review and you can also add a comment.
Smart Ones: When you buy a 'Smart Ones' WW meal, you can turn this simple meal into a better meal with just a few simple, extra ingredients. Click on recipes first.

Goals and a Victory

I've waited until after the weekend to post my goals. Although it's always better when I post before the weekend, better late than never. I didn't have a horrible weekend, but it wasn't stellar either. SO, my goals for the week (in addition to spinning and lifting):

1) Get to bed early at least 5 nights
2) Show a 1 pound loss
3) Run 5 miles

Shocker, right? Pretty much the same goals I've had since the inception of the blog. However, I've added the 5 miles because I went running the other day (after about a month of NOT running), and noticed a significant improvement in my cardiovascular strength. I assume it's from spinning; I know my heartrate recovery has improved just from the time I've been in that class.

And now I will share my triumph of the morning, choosing grapenuts over my husband's most delicious pancakes in the world:

I know what you're thinking, and NO, that little bite wasn't taken by me. I actually ripped a little piece for the youngling. I wish I could import the smell onto this post so you could really appreciate the superhuman strength it took to touch and smell it, without putting any in my mouth.

Happy Memorial Day!

I only sniffed it!

I walked into the kitchen and saw it, sitting in the pan next to the sink. I must've stood over it for a good 2 minutes just looking, when I heard Aaron shout from another room, "DON'T DO IT!" I shook my head, but then caught a whiff; I was frozen. I picked it up and just smelled. mmmmm. Cinnamon, eggy, milk, whole wheat goodness... French Toast, I love you!

Just

One

Bite...

Aaron walked into the kitchen, "Ummmm, you know that piece of french toast is like 6 hours old right?" He glanced at me with a you're-not-really-going-to-eat-that-are-you look; It was too hard to actually take a bite with him staring at me.

Nighttime Munchies

Last night after i had put the kids to bed I found myself wanting a treat. So I opened the freezer:

Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. Only 140 calories AND they have 3 grams of fiber! perfect! The only problem was I wasn't really hungry, and wasn't even craving anything. I just had a long day and wanted to feel rewarded. (sigh) so I put it back, grabbed my water and went downstairs to watch some Law and Order. One small caloric step, but a huge step for my weight loss. Oh, and one more thing, while I was watching TV, Aaron walked into the kitchen:

hmmmm. what sounds goooood? oooo, I know! an

ice. creammmmm. saaaaaandwich. yummmm.

You wanted to eat THAT?

This is a picture of what I really wanted to pick at but didn't. I love how gross it actually looks in photo form. Blue box mac n cheese; it's so hard for me not to steal a couple of bites! and yet when I look at it the food is the same color as that flourescent yellow fork. gross.

(FYI sorry about no goals posting. I'm having a good week but after my eating this weekend- ANY weight loss on Friday's weigh-in will be a miracle... )

The lone biscuit

This is what I really wanted to eat this morning... but didn't. Following advice from my mother concerning mischevious kids, (Don't get mad, get the camera), I have adopted a similar strategy with food.

What is it about there just being one left that makes me think it belongs in my mouth?
