You all know I love me some Kashi products. I've always been a fan of the GOLean crunch breakfast cereal, but recently I was introduced to the honey almond flax version.
Be still my heart. We all know that anything with the word "honey" in it (when talking about breakfast cereal) means SWEET.
And sure enough the very first bite I thought, "Oh hooray for shu-u-u-u-ugar! brown rice cane crystals!
And then on the next bite it occured to me, the Kashi tasted remarkably similar to this:
Honey Smacks.
And so yes, that box of Honey Smacks is mine. I was so curious and it tasted SO similar that I went out and bought some (much to the joy of my six year old, "NO WAY! MOM!! YOU GOT REAL CEREAL???"
"Yes honey, as opposed to all of the imaginary cheerios you shovel into your mouth every morning."
"AWESOME!!!"). I have to admit, I felt a little nostalgic as I opened up the box. I haven't had paper-foil-packaged cereal in a very long time.
And guess what- they DID taste a LOT alike. The Kashi was way crunchier and more substantial. But the flavor was quite a bit similar. Am I supposed to be bothered or excited? I'm not sure. A little of both. So if you are a fan of Honey Smacks but wouldn't mind getting 9 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber, and 500 mg of Omega-3's every morning, you may want to give it a try!
Good thing I got to the bottom of this. Research is fun. (Does Kashi make anything that resembles a ding-dong?)
(p.s. Here's a snack that uses all those leftover Kashi cereal crumbs. My toddler and I devoured it.)

ding dong :)
those words shall ever remind me of the rosie odonnell show.
HOMEGURL LOVES HER SOME DINGDONGS.
the other nothing my husband was eating the new Fiber One cereal and it smelled (and tasted) PRECISELY like Golden Grahams!
hmmm....
:)
I'm going to the grocery today! My kids will be so happy. They like regular Kashi, but they'll love the Smacks-flavored one.
On those strawberries--is that fat-free Cool Whip? Yogurt? I can't tell. It looks good. Never thought about using those cereal crumbs as topping.
Where is your Biggest Loser finale commentary?
Hmm, sounds definitely worth a try!
And let me know when they come out with Kashi Lucky Charms, okay? I'd be a Kashi fan for life.
I'm with Crabby -- I love, love, love Lucky Charm cereal, but sadly haven't eaten it in years!
I do really like Kashi GoLean the original. That's been my breakfast of choice for the last month or two. Although, I'm a bit put off by the words: crunchy fiber twigs. Oh well, nothing a little Splenda can't take care of!
MIz,
Oooo, I was JUST thinking, if only they had a cerreal that tasted just like golden grahams!
runnermom,
Cottage Cheese.
BL commentary, coming... but I only watched the last 20 minutes, lol...so it's not going to be deep.
Crabby,
Lucky charms, of course. I'm just laughing trying to think of what they'd try to call the marshmallows...
Glam,
crunchy fiber twigs? What? That doesn't sound appetizing? LOL!
It'd be interesting to compare the sugar content of both of these, is it pretty much the same or is one significantly better?
I'm asking because I have to watch my sugar intake due to medical reasons.
wow that is a good review. I think I might have to try it sometime :-)
kate, Kashi, 12 g, HOney Smacks, 15. not a huge diff.
cara
I still love me some oatmeal banana and flax!
i love the "REAL" comment, haha. i actually just bought a little box of honeycombs for a sugary-snack. Crunchy and low in calories. I haven't tried the kashi cereals because they are a bit pricey where I come from. Do you think they are worth it?
I love Kashi stuff (although I love ding dongs too!)
That is a great looking snack!
eurydice,
they are WAY pricey at my regular grocery store. I only get the GO Lean stuff when they have it at Costco. It's SOOO much cheaper there. I wouldn't buy it if I had to pay full price at my local place.
BUT, if you know somewhere where you can get it even slightly discounted, It's definitely worth a try.
thanks WM!
Hee! I had the same thought about the honey flax tasting like sugar smacks! I've even mixed them together. And then I drink all the yummy leftover milk. Man, now I want a bowl of cereal!
PS> Target house brand (Archer Farms) makes some very tasty near-perfect imitations of the Kashi cereals for a much lower price (and yeah, they're organic too).
Thanks Charlotte, I'm headed to Target right now, I'll have to see if I can get some of that cereal.
Just had to say that I love eating the strawberries (plus any other fruit as well) with vanilla yogurt as a snack. Not sure how healthy it is...I can't abide the no-sugar kind of yogurt. Haven't tried the Kashi. I make my own granola with a ton of nuts, so it's not at all low-fat, but still really healthy.
I love Kashi. And this cereal is one of my favorites. :)
I for one prefer the hostess cupcakes over the ding dongs because of the additional icing factor.
Have you tried the Kashi cookies? Talk about addictive. Dear god. The oatmeal dark chocolate... someone stop me.
I'm a fan of the Kashi HAF cereal. Also the cascadian farms clifford cereal ain't half bad either (too lazy to go look at the actual name)
I have been a long time reader and haven't jumped into the conversation. I guess it is time to end my voyeuristic days especially since you are talking about two of my favorite things, cereal and Kashi. I could eat ceral for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Have you tried the Kashi frozen dinners? They are a little pricey but do go on sale. They are a great alterntive to ANOTHER salad for lunch.
Keep up the good work!
I love that Kashi cereal, it is so yummy!
