Gap Gift Card, I Miss You Already

I had a revelation yesterday in a dressing room at TJ Maxx. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I have been working out for the past long while in rags. And not cute Williams Sonoma washcloth or dishtowel rags. The kind you make from old shirts you don't wear anymore because they're dirty or have holes in them.

See, because of all of your great input on Monday's post, I decided to venture out into the retail world (ahem. the discount retail world) to just see if there was any workout attire available in my budget range of nil. So I started at the Gap and found some cute workout wicky capris, (much cooler than the ones I saw online) but ouch. 39.50. Even with a gift card, that's a little hard to swallow. So I ventured off to TJ's and Target to see if I could do any better. I hauled in about 15 things to the curtained dressing room...along with a six year-old who was wearing his coat backwards (with his hood on his face so he kept bumping into stuff), a four year old in buzz light year pajamas (shoes sans socks), and an 18 month old strapped in an umbrella stroller. I knew I had to be fast. I wouldn't be long before the little one stood up and figured out how to walk with the stroller dragging behind him...still fastened in but able to use his feet.

Miracle of miracles they were actually pretty easy to rein in. They just kept popping in and out of curtains (making the toddler snort he was laughing so hard). It helped that we were the only ones in the dressing room. And so for a couple of brief moments I glanced at myself in these new workout clothes and instantly realized how I probably should've gotten a couple of new things oh, I don't know...3 years ago. For example. A bunch of the t-shirts I run in are from Target. But I wore them with the last pregnancy until I couldn't anymore, so they are majorly stretched out in the tummy and arms. And the long-sleeved shirt I wear underneath said t-shirts is a weird greenish grayish stripe. I think I looked like a depressed clown.

Anyway, I didn't find anything at TJ's or Target that came close to the capris I tried on first at the Gap. I kept comparing everything to them. Which made me think I should probably just bite the bullet and get them. So I did:

And I love them.

SO The jeans can wait a little longer, although I will need some 6's, it's not like the 8's are going to be falling off of me tomorrow. And really, my need for some new workout clothing far surpassed the need to replace my favorite sports bra, it's holding up just well.

Yahoo! I'm jealous. I'm in the same boat. I am wearing the same workout clothes I wore throughout my last pregnancy (until I couldn't,) and after. AND, I was thirty pounds heavier when I bought these clothes. So not only are they old and faded, they are really big. Maybe I will hit the outlet mall this weekend and see what I can find.

I think you made the right choice. :)

BTW, you are a braver woman than I...taking your kids clothes shopping. And I am laughing hysterically about the toddler walking around with the umbrella stroller on his butt. Fortunately niether one of my kids have figured that one out!

ah, you crack me up with "depressed clown"! Yay for new capris from Gap! Enjoy them because you totally deserved them.

(and I'm still in awe of the fact that you took THREE children clothes shopping!)

I love gap, but they can be too expensive for me too. heh. No one gives me gift cards there. Booo. hahaha.

Sounds like some fancy pants though. Woo hoo.

And good job on getting into the 6's! That was your goal right?

totally what I would have done (down to the toddler heading in and out of dressing room experiences) as that new workout stuff will motivate (and wick) the hell out of you!

Now, two other things:

will I never NOT think of yesterdays post when parking at the gym?

now Im tempted to start a new category titled: Carlarious....or not?

have a great day.

Good for you! It sounds like you'll get tons of use out of them, which definitely makes the splurge worth it. Plus, it is just more fun to work out when you are looking cute. :)

Robin, I know. It's funny, I don't really ever care what I workout it (obviously), but just the look and feel of better stuff actually made me feel a little better and made me want to go workout. So even if it's a temporary motivator, I'll take it. As for the kids, I know, I'm insane. I don't usually ever take them clothes shopping, but desperate times call for desperate measures!

Thanks WM, I'll try to post a picture when I actually get a chance to go running later today.

cara, I love gap, but they can be too expensive for me too. Me too. THe card was actually from leftover rewards points on one of our credit cards. No one gets me gift cards there either. :)
ANd I'm not in the 6 just yet. Trust me, you'll KNOW when I get there!

Yay for new workout wear. I too have a gap giftcard i got at Christmas and I can't decide whether to get a cute shirt or maternity swim suit or wait till after I have the baby for a cute something or another. What do you think? have you ever worn their swimsuits? Just curious since you seem pretty diehard on the Gap Body line.

MIz, will I never NOT think of yesterdays post when parking at the gym?
LOL! Me too.
(And I was laughing to myself all day yesterday about Carlarious...)

Scrumpy, thanks, I think you're right. :)

Amber, be right back, I can't pry the baby off of me right now...

amber, when are you due? Are you going to be swimming a lot? I've never even tried on a Gap swimsuit, so I'm no help there. If it were me, I'd probably save it til after. But if you spend it now, it's really nice to feel cute when you're pregs. Then again, It's nice to have something like that to help out when your body is changing so much post-baby. Then again, your body will be changing a lot (you know?) so I don't know.

...lot of help I am...

No, we can't have you dressing like a depressed clown when you work out!

Glad you found a purchase you love. That's the most important part! For me (even though I voted for jeans), workout pants are really what I spend the most time in, so it's nice to have good fitting cute ones.

You are so brave to venture out shopping with all three young 'uns! Two is my limit. Or One. Or none!

Hey, I should have let you know runnermom is Donna. I'm having identity issues!

Lol, I need a new sportsbra! Babies do really weird things to your body - like shrink things you don't want them to...

Yay! New workout gear! Summer is coming and you won't wear jeans then anyway! Then in the fall when you are a perfect size 6 you can get your new jeans and knock the socks off the world! Woo-woo!

Get on with your bad self! :)

I'm due August 6 and my parents have a pool and our small neighborhood pool is across the street from our house so I do plan on swimming (or floating anyway). Maybe I'll try old navy and save the giftcard for some nice wicking capris (wink, wink) so I can look cute-ish while trying to get some semblance of a body back after baby.

Now I'm all obsessed with the Gap Body sports bra!!! Thanks, Katie, thanks a lot... And since I just spent my "fun money" on my nightmare of a Jeep repair, no bra for me! Okay, who am I kidding? I don't really need to buy groceries this week. I'm gettin' the bra!

Glad you got to buy the fancy-pants, well, pants! I bet you look like a serious athlete in them. No more depressed clown!

I'm so glad you got something you like! Don't forget about eBay though when you want those jeans... :)

have you tried "Danskin" leggings? they are great for working out. nylon with a little spandex. they stay black even if you wash and dry them a bunch. i have 2 pairs i've worn for 3 years and they still look brand new. not too thick, not too thin, and no camel toe. they're also not too expensive.
