The fear of running in the cold, ice, and snow. I'm Over it. I ran every day this week even the day with single digit temperatures. THAT was cold! I got about 50 feet from my house and thought, "This is craziness! What am I doing out here!? Why am I not running back into my house?" I actually had one of my fastest times that day. If I stopped, even at street corners, my body started to chill. So I just kept going...faster and faster...until I was home. I've got to write these little victories down, they help outweigh the dorky stuff.
Like Today, I tripped and fell. And before you leave a comment telling me to get off that ice, it had nothing to do with weather. I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk. Nice. There was a girl waiting at a bus stop about 20 feet in front of me when it happened. I swear I heard a giggle as I passed her. I also, feeling very uninhibited because of my black winter hat (that makes me almost unidentifiable to the untrained eye), busted out a couple of dance moves at a stoplight this morning. Someday I'll get Aaron to hop in our car and follow me on my run. There's a video post for ya.
Since I'm too lazy and tired to connect these in any sort of cohesive paragrahs, here is a list of some of the things I've learned over the past week. Enumerated.
1) Although I think I lost weight this week (1 of the 2 pounds added over the never-ending holidays) I'm finding that I'm not having the same physical and emotional reaction to the number on the scale. Maybe I'm just tired of caring, I don't know. What I do know is this could change at any given moment and so I am enjoying the freedom from the oppression that is the scale. I still weigh myself every couple of days, I'm still running, lifting weights, keeping my food journal, everything. Maybe it has something to do with focusing on other things in my life right now, or the fact that I go running by the cemetery where Clay is buried on a regular basis. Every time I pass it, my heart hurts a little; I stop thinking about stupid things and start thinking about life. Family, goals, big picture-type things. Or it might just be that some kind of hormonal biochemical switch flipped. I have no clue. I may very well be back next week whining about some weight fluctuation (a very real possibility people). We'll still keep the Friday weigh-in...I think. Just for the accountability.
2) I like running. In the past it has always been a vehicle for calorie-burning but I can honestly say I'm growing to really enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I miss my gym membership hard, but have been pleasantly surprised at how much I crave a good run. Even in the cold!
3) Every time I go, I have a turning-lemons-into-lemonade feeling. I actually in a weird way am glad we couldn't afford to renew my gym membership. Being shoved out of my comfort zone has payed off so far, and I've actually been *gasp* grateful.
4)It's been a week. Winter doesn't really end here until April. I've got a long way to go.

Way to go Katie! I told you you would love running in the cold once you get used to it. The other good thing about it is that your lungs get really strong, which makes running when its nice out so easy. Oh and your not alone with random dance moves. Keep doing great!
Chelsea
please make Aaron video the stoplight corner dance... I can picture it in my head and am waiting anxiously for the real thing! ha ha ha!! :)
What a great post! I like cold-weather running too, as long as there's not much snow or ice to deal with. (From my NY days; not here in California!)
But even here, if it's in the forties it gives me an extra boost of energy I don't get when it's warm.
Good for you for taking on a new challenge and taming it!
I truly believe mid January is the absolute coldest temperatures of the entire year. I think in a week or two, it will actually start to reverse itself. It's a slow climb, but it won't be 0-10 degrees in February. (That's not a promise)
i tried running outside the other day(it was around 35) and i quit, so i give u lots of cheers for keeping up with it. but i've got a question that might help ME w/ my running outside. what do u wear? does the whole lungs freezing thing get better with time? thanks! :)
Really great post Katieo! Although my shins don't let me do the cold weather running (or warm weather running for that matter), I will definitely be making some play in the snow time this weekend!
It is a really big step when you can separate your emotions from what the scale says. Me - not there yet, props to you!!!
get em girl!! i need to start running outdoors.
seriously though, i'm sick of winter already and it only just snowed it once. yuck! i dont know how you do it, you're a strong woman!!
chels915, that's great to hear about strong lungs. I didn't know that.
em, lol! We'll see...
as I wrote that I thought of you. (Although I don't think I'd be able to live up to the picture in your head!)
crabby, I like the energy boost too. But I just wish it could be a boost from the a little "warmer" cold. Like 40's, not 5's.
amyr, I totally think you're right. Even the next couple of days I *think* it's supposed to get up to a high of 35, not 20, it's amazing what a difference those few degrees make.
ok linds, I wear dry wick shirt on the bottom layer (keeps the sweat away from your body- although some mornings I haven't been able to and have been ok, just a little colder) then a long sleeve lycra/cotton mix tshirt, then a pullover fleece on top. Non of them are "running" clothes. I wear a pair of bike shorts under my workout pants on the bottom (keeps my thighs from getting too cold). As soon as I can afford it, I think I'm going to invest in some running tights to go under my workout pants.
As far as the lungs thing, my lungs have been pretty ok since I started. On my really cold day though, I had a hard time inhaling in such cold air, that made my breathing really shallow and quick... at the beginning. But if I'm going on Chelsea's comment, i'd have to say yes, I think your lungs would get stronger over time. (also, I go really slow, that might have something to do with it).
oh yeah, and linds, I wear gloves and a really warm black hat.
sarah, re: the scale. I've never been able to do it either! That's why this is so weird to me! And snow play is a workout. Seriously, i took the kids sledding the other day and was huffing and puffing after 10 minutes!
Oh Kelly, I'm so sick of it too. I'm so ready for it to be OVER! If you do run outdoors, you gotta post and us know how it went! (although you do have access to a gym, and I don't know if I'd be motivated AT ALL if I had the option to workout inside)
Your post made me want to go out running right now. Perhaps not in single digits, but I still want to go. Too bad I am at work. Boo.
Good job!
YAY Katieo! That is so great! I walked/jogged outside yesterday...BRRR. I actually got to go the th YMCA this morning,it was OK,I like to be at home better...On the tripping on the sidewalk front LOL I od that kind of stuff all the time, total clutz.I fell totally flat on my face a couple of months ago and I looked back to see what tripped me...um nothing...my feet...
Good for you!!
I don't think I could do it. I'm in Texas, and today it is about 38 out. You should see everybody. We are all bundled up and shivering talking about how cold it is. I guess it is all relative.
It will be back up to 70 in about three days. Gotta love Texas weather. It's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.
GREAT job! I could not run in ice and cold. I am a WUSSY in the cold.It was 60 degrees yesterday and I had on a t shirt, sweatshirt with hood up, and north face jacket. Lets say I was sweating from head to toe after one mile...but would rather do that then get ONE goosebump! Keep itup!
cara, lol, it's a little easier to want to go when we actually can't.
Emmy, I fell totally flat on my face a couple of months ago and I looked back to see what tripped me...um nothing...my feet...
LOL! Yes. been there too. Good for you, I see you are getting your crazy cardio in! :)
Robin, The thing is, above 15 degrees or so, I really do think it's pretty much the same. You're cold, you know? But above 40 and it gets a lot more comfortable (for me anyway). And it's relative even out here. I remember thinking around Halloween when it was in the high 40's, low 50's that we were freeeeeezing!
You're awesome!
Cold weather running sure does build character, eh? :P
That is so great! I can't believe you went out in the cold! I guess that leaves me no excuse right? I might start running at the gym again but it might be a while before I can take on the geat outdoors.
Ps I LOVE the random dance moves!
What a beautiful post! KatieO, you're a REAL runner regardless of what that silly shoe advert says.
This post is proof positive.
Great, great post. So positive and happy! Yayyyyy!
I love the picture with the hat! Too funny. I would totally lvoe to see a video post of you busting out the dance moves at a stop light.
The snow looks pretty but this is also coming from a native NorCal girl and we don't get snow in SF. I don't do well in extremem temperatures so I like to admire from afar ;).
Great job on the running, that is one thing I will NOT even try because I'm even clumsier than you are and have broken my toes just from running in the house. My legs were not ment to run, they even start to rebel if I walk fast for too long. Yea they'll just stop working and I trip due to a lame leg episode.
I just love your site! Especially the "healthiest thing i ate today"... nice positive point of view :) great job with the run, I won't complain anymore when I run in "cold" San Diego weather!
"Every time I pass it, my heart hurts a little; I stop thinking about stupid things and start thinking about life. Family, goals, big picture-type things."
Something similar happened to me yesterday which is what prompted the "I'm over hating myself for the state of my house" post. If only I could hold onto that clarity...
I'm glad running is getting to you. I have a love/hate relationship with it. But when I'm feelin' the love -it's great.
Katie! You've crossed over to liking running! That is huge. Beware, it may take over your life. :-)
I think it's good to keep in mind that it is EASY to make excuses. (Come July we'll be complaining that it's too HOT to exercise outside) They key is really to just STICK WITH IT...No Excuses!
Congratulations for your great week!
Is that a pic of YOU?! LOVE IT!
I have to tell you that I'm truly inspired by this post. I may just have to put on the shoes...
"Every time I pass it, my heart hurts a little; I stop thinking about stupid things and start thinking about life. Family, goals, big picture-type things."
Thanks for the reminder.
This post was so inspiring!
I totally admire runners like you. Any tips for a beginner?
I'm not sure how I stumbled across your blog but I am so glad! I love reading your adventures loosing weight. I need to loose about 40 lbs. and I know reading your blog will give me great motivation and fun ideas. I love the post about dino nuggets. I ate a couple this week that looked just like your picture. I am going to have to try taking pictures of the things I want to eat. Great idea! Anyway- thanks for taking the time to write down your thoughts and I look forward to reading more! (I live in Utah too!)
Thanks for your comments everyone! We've got some friends staying with us this weekend so I won't have the normal access to my computer. I hope to catch up with all of you on Monday. :)
(and adora, yes, that's me,
anonymous, thanks for stopping by,
jess's food coma:
1)get fitted for a pair of "real" running shoes from a "real" running store. Trust me, they're more pricey but will go a long way in preventing injury.
2) Go really slow (at least at first).
3) That's all. I still consider myself a beginner! Those two things have helped me out a lot.
Shrinking mama, argh! Dino buddies will be my downfall! loL! Glad you found us too! :)
HA! I love that you busted some moves on the street corner LOL!
This is exactly what I needed to read today. I am training for a half marathon in April. Although I'm not a great often, I often dread my running days. Running for me is very hard, probably the hardest exercise I've done. Although my times are improving I still beat myself up. Thanks for the motivation and encouragement to stay with it and look forward to improving. I love this blob!!
Good for you for running when there's snow on the ground! I live in VA, so we don't get very much snow, but when it snowed the other day I stayed inside -- I was afraid of hitting a patch of ice on the sidewalk and falling on my behind!
Great post! Love the picture, and I love the lemons into lemonade feeling. SO AWESOME!!! :D
I can still remember when I ran my first entire mile 4 years ago at age 32. I was thrilled to have finally done it, but it was another year until I finally understood what the heck a runner's high was and why it was such an addiction. I am still fighting the cold, I don't like to go out to run if it is under 35 degrees... I'll keep working on that one. Thanks for the inspiration!
You are such a rock star Katie! Was that really you a few weeks ago afraid to go run outside? Look at you now, stud! I'm so proud.
Oh. Man. I'm so jealous. I've always wanted to be a runner but it seems like it's just impossible sometimes. Keep up the good work!
