Out With the Old, In With the New

It's time to bid farewell to the old shoes.
Now say hello to the new fancy ones.
Thanks to a friend (who shall remain anonymous), I was able to purchase some brand spankin' new running shoes from a real running store (no Sports Authority clearance racks this time thankyouverymuch). Aaron and I tried to do some research on the best shoes and top-rated woman's running shoes, you know, just to be prepared before the purchase. But as soon as I stepped foot into the store, the nice folks at Runner's Corner just took over. I was so obviously a newbie runner, the girl who was helping me explained everything she would be doing, like I was at a doctor's office about to get some new unfamiliar test done. "And then I'm going to bring out many different pairs of shoes for you to try. You will try them on. then you will turn and exit the store to test out each and every shoe. Understand?"

"Uh-huh." It sounded simple but after she had studied my old shoe (even taking it in the back to get a second opinion), and then demonstrated the correct way to lace it (that "extra" little hole down at the bottom? Ah-ha!) I was slightly intimidated. She even made me demonstrate my lacing ability in front of her so she could make sure I was doing it right. I must've tried on 15 pairs of shoes, and then tried on the favorites against each other. I took them all for tests runs in the parking lot...every time.

Well, the perfect shoe found it's way to my foot and I was blown away at how different it felt. Light. Cushy. Socky. I could not wait to go for a real run. I knew I'd have to wait til the next day seeing as it was evening and pitch black when we left the store. That night, shortly after we put the kids to bed I was summoned up to my boy's room. After a quick no-monsters-anywhere scan I turned around and bumped directly into this,

or I should say, my KNEE bumped directly into that left corner of my kid's bed frame. OWW! I didn't really think much of it seeing as my klutziness and the path of destruction that is regularly left through all parts of my house makes for a lot of these incidences. It wasn't until the next morning when I got out of bed and realized walking was painful did the realization set in that I would NOT be able to try out my new shoes that morning. As the day wore on however, my knee started to feel a lot better and I knew it was just a surface injury, a bruise at best. So mid-afternoon, I got my running gear on, all my winter stuff, turned around in my bedroom to reach my fancy shoes and OUCH. I hit my knee again. On our bed this time. In the exact. same. place. Tears were shed, yes, it hurt that bad.

Why did I have to bump my knee in the same place right at that time? C'mon! New shoes! A day where my husband is home in the middle of the afternoon to watch the kids, 3 days of Christmas eating, no precipitation. And I couldn't go. Yeah, I cried.

**My knee is feeling much better now.
I will go tomorrow...barring any further injuries.

UPDATE: I went. They were everything I hoped for and more. I could cry tears of joy just thinking about it.

I had no idea there were so many different shoes. I just usually go to Kohl's and see what "looks cool," is in my budget and feels the best. (Hey - I've upgraded form Wal-mart's selection!) It has worked in the past, but now I'm curious about what I'm missing out on. Did you have all your boys with you? I hope not. If it had been me, I couldn't have had any kids there, with all the information she was giving, all the shoes to try on, and all the trial runs in the parking lot. It sounds mentally exhausting. Sounds like it was worth it, though, to find the *perfect* shoes for you. Sorry you couldn't try them out. Hopefully tomorrow! Is the perfect shoe different for everyone?

Jen. I'm telling you. YOU ARE MISSING OUT. I am a total believer now. (If you click on the "runners corner" link, that'll give you an idea...)
No, I didn't have the boys with me. We got a babysitter (thanks Holly! :) and it's a good thing, it took about 45 minutes. (And no it wasn't exhausting, I drank up the information. Different story if the kids had been there) And yes, I think the perfect shoe is different for everyone. How you run, what your arches are like, everyone's feet are different. If you have the money or can save up, I would definitely recommend the whole experience.

Very interesting info on that link! I wonder if there is a store around here like that. I'd love to experience that, too. I can't even imagine there being that many shoes out there! I may actually enjoy running more! Ü

VERY fancy new shoes. I keep hearing about goign and getting fitted for running shoes and how great it is but I don't run so I think it would be wasted on me. Although if I get bored one day I may go try them on just to see what all the hype is about ;).
Sorry to hear about your knee, I do that stuff ALL THE TIME and totally know how you feel. It's like your legs stop working or something right? That's how mind feel. Hope you didn't do too much damage and that you have had many opportunities to enjoy your new shoes by now!

And NO. I haven't gotten to try them out yet. Off to bed, so hopefully in the morning (crossing fingers)

Aww you poor thing! I know how exciting it is to try out new shoes. I feel for ya. Hopefully your knee is much better today and you can get out to try those babies out! Good luck!

PS I love the new kicks!!

Glam said...

Do they sell knee pads at Runner's Corner too? lol!

I have no room to talk. I look like I've been to battle with all the bumps and bruises from bootcamp. Seriously, how do you get a bruise from kicking a body bag (you know, the kickboxing kind, not the kind with actual dead bodies in them...)?!

Love the news sneaks. Hope your clumsy butt gets to try them out soon! ;)

Did they fit comfortably right out of the box? I regret every purchase I make on the "Big 5" clearance shelves because my feet go numb for months while I "break them in". I've been afraid of going to a real running store for fear they would rob me of the few precious dollars I have set aside once a year for new running shoes. Will you say what you spent? Even a ballpark figure?
Thanks!

Congrats on the new shoes! I was fitted for running shoes and I love them. It makes a huge difference. And Amy, they should be great right out of the box. If you have to "break them in," they aren't the right shoe. I paid about $130 for mine. It's a lot of money, but I only run in them (if I am going to do the stairmaster or elliptical, I wear my other shoes,) so they last a while.

Sorry about the knee. That sucks. I hate when I'm all psyched up to exercise and something derails me.

Hope you had a great Christmas!

Yea! New shoes! How exciting. Our running store has you run on a treadmill while they watch your foot position and stride, watch for pronation, etc. Then when you find the right pair, they send you on a test run in the parking lot. It's fun, but you kind of feel silly at the same time, am I right? They will make SUCH A DIFFERENCE, making you look forward to a run.
I hope you get to try them out today! Maybe what the other poster said about knee pads isn't such a bad idea. LOL!

Oh, someone asked about prices---I found my pair of Brooks neutral shoes for only $85. The Mizuno stability shoes I had last time were $100. But I guess I'm stable now. ha ha

Thanks carolyn. So far so good, Hopefully it's not snowing.

Oh Glam, seriously, I should dig out my old volleyball kneepads, lol. I'm ALWAYS knocking my knees. Glad to see you're back! When does the new bootcamp start?

amy, yes, they should fit right out of the box. And I totally know what you mean, my new balances took MONTHS to break in and my 4th toe on my left foot STILL goes numb when I run in them. Most of the shoes at this store were 75 - 100. There were a couple that were over a hundred, but not many. I paid around 90 (but had a big fat gift certificate so it didn't matter). If you set aside money every year for shoes, I would just plan on 100. It really is worth every penny. I'm never going back to the clearance racks!

haha... I got new shoes at the running store too... and they told me the same thing! and I was like "why had I never hear about that before!?! all my shoes have had that... I could have had a better fit all this time?!?!"

I too am desperately trying to take advantage of Mr F's vacation... I'm trying to get in a workout everyday that he is home to make up for all the days I took off last week!

THanks Robin, yes, we had an awesome Christmas. Hope you did too! :)

Donna, They didn't have a treadmill in the store. She told me she wanted to watch me run to check for that stuff but after I showed her my old shoes, she could tell what she needed to know from them. (the blizzard outside might've had something to do with it too)

OUCHIES! Hope the knee is feeling better.

Getting fitted makes a BIG difference. You can end up with cheap or expensive shoes but they can make a big difference in your running...and can make you a brand whore :D

Running is so funny.

Enjoy!

Mrs. Furious, I had the SAME reaction to the extra hole. Aaron runs way more than me and HE didn't know about it. (So I didn't feel so bad.) And yes, I'm taking advantage of Aaron being home but he's got a ton of grading to do and we both have been staying up way too late so my morning workouts have morphed into post-lunch workouts.

Marie, totally. Although I was surprised they didn't even CARRY Nike's there. I was hoping to get a sport kit too :( Aaron retro-fit his, I'm not sure, I might have him do the same to mine...

Runner's Corner DOES rock! I went through the whole "million-pair try-on and compare" routine when I got my shoes there and were so surprised how great they felt! Like running on air! The folks there really know what they are talking about and I wouldn't buy running shoes off the rack ever again.
I hope you enjoy the new kicks...despite our weather being in the 20's!!! I'll be on the lookout for you running around town in your great shoes!

Shoes are very important!! Especially once you start increasing your distances. Congrats on finding the perfect pair!

By the way, I am super clumsy also.

I still have my old volleyball kneepads! I completely forgot about them until you mentioned it! Ha.

This Saturday is the last day for this bootcamp session. We get weighed and measured. I'm not peeking!

New session starts January 2!!!! Woohoo!

I am with you on the Runner's Corner thing. I loved the shoes I got there and my legs stopped hurting - of course that was two years ago that I was running. You are an inspiration! Good luck with going tomorrow - maybe you will start to LIKE running. Notice that I didn't say love?

New shoes, how exciting. Sorry about the knee. I would have cried too.

I am TOTALLY intrigued by this custom shoe thing!! I bought a cheap pair last time and for what I paid, they're pretty good. But I'm in the same boat as Amy - my feet still go numb in these after 30 minutes or so.
I will definitely be checking out that link and finding a place like that here in Atlanta. And can somebody fill me in on the extra hole thing? I have no idea what that's for!

ThickChick said...

Oh, what a sad tale! You were so eager to exercise and yet, you couldn't. Doesn't the right pair of shoes make ALL the difference? Good for you for getting fitted!

katieo said...

Adora, fyi, On my run yesterday NO NUMBNESS. That was the first time EVER (even all the way back to high school) where my 4th toe on my left foot didn't go numb. THE FIRST TIME. They were fantastic.
You'll just have to go to the running store and get someone to show you the loopy thing. It's too hard to write out.

I love your story, but did you mention what make they were?

I love getting new shoes too.... even more than a new outfit to wear! Glad you actually did get to go for a run after the knee incidents.

katieo said...

ashley, another post is coming on the actual brand. But they're pearl izumi's

(and Chris, I LOVE getting new shoes. period. lol)

Crabby McSlacker said...

Oooh they're cute!

I have Pearl Izumi's too--but totally by accident. They happened to be on sale at our local running store and I mainly bought them because they looked good. I'm glad it turns out they're good shoes!

Glad the knee is feeling better, that must have been so frustrating!

Kickass on the good shoes! Love it!

And hey, I gave you a shout out on one of my many blogs: http://losingourthighsgainingourhotness.blogspot.com/

Seriously, Thanks!

I went through the same thing when I went to my local running store. Isn't it awesome? I am due for a new pair myself.

Sorry about your knee, but glad to see the update of you going out in the new shoes. :)

I just bought those exact same shoes at a running store...they felt like slippers from the first time I wore them!!!
