Public Service Announcement for Pilferers

Here is a post for you to remember while rummaging through your child's Halloween candy tomorrow, and in the weeks to come. Oh C'mon! You moms out there don't even TRY to tell me you've never done it. And for you non-moms, or moms with grown kids, I'm sure you'll come across your fair share of Halloween candy too, so keep that gaurd up! This is where I'm vulnerable, so I hope in sharing I'll think about these numbers before I actually eat anything:

* 22 pieces of candy corn = 140 (calories)
* One Package Reese's Peanut Butter Cups = 260
* Two (does anyone ever just eat ONE?) fun size Milky Way bars = 180
* Two Butterfinger fun size bars = 200 calories
* One package King-sized Twix = 474 (yeeeesh)

Check these out too, not AS bad (that is calorie-wise, I mean there still have zero nutritonal value), if you like them.
* 1 Tootsie Pop 1 pop = 60 calories
* 1 Tootsie Roll 1 small roll = 13 calories (alas, 13 measly calories! Too bad these were the ones I always ate last, when all the good stuff was gone. Oh yeah. and Good n' Plenty's. I swear those things are NOT candy)
* Twizzlers 1 treat size pkg.= 45 calories
Or you could go for some dark chocolate (yay anti-oxidants!). I LOVE breaking off a *little* piece of Hershey's special dark bar when I feel the need for a treat. A little bit goes a really long way.

Think you'll be too tempted by all that candy your kids will bring home? Put it in a ziplock bag and throw it in the freezer. (Oh, I am such a mean mom!) I let them go a little hogwild on Halloween night but the day after, I control the flow. I just take a couple pieces out for the kids around lunch (or whenever) and it's usually thawed, (ok, maybe a LITTLE hard) when they've finished eating. It's great for me because when I'm craving candy, I have to sit there and wait for it to get soft enough to even take a bite. By the time it has, the craving has passed (and if it hasn't, then at least it's only 1 piece right?)

Are you ready for Halloween? Want to go look up the caloric value (or grams of fat and or sugar) of your favorite candy and post it in the comments? No? That's ok, leave us a comment anyway...about anything! We like you.

My plan for Halloween is to:

A) buy candy that I don't really like
B) Save a few points and Choose ONE treat from the bunch and set it aside for the end of the night, that way while I'm handing out candy, I won't be tempted because I know I have a treat waiting for me when I'm all done!

It's going to be a rough night though. I can't even imagine have kiddos with candy around all the time!

I love the freezer idea!

My plan for halloween is:

Stay in Chile. Very few people celebrate down here :)

Works for me! Although I'm not going to lie, if I were in the U.S. and happened to knock on someone's door and they just happened to give me Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, I would scarf the whole thing and not feel the least bit guilty.

If you're going to eat it, enjoy it! and then get right back on the bandwagon!

Alas, the first "high calorie" list looks way more appealing than the second "better" list.

And I use the freezer trick too (just put some slices of Junky Safeway Cake in there last night--don't know how it will taste when thawed but had to get it out of the kitchen). However, be warned: Milkyway bars taste pretty darn good frozen too. When I go on an out-of-control candy raid, the prospect of a broken tooth isn't quite enough to stop me.

I like mamacita's suggestion: get the heck out of the country!

Carolyn,
a) smart
b) also smart.

GOOD LUCK tonight! :)

thanks Kim, doesn't always work, but it's better than just having it laying around

mamacita. Leaving the country! Why didn't I think of that? (although I have to admit, Canada wouuld probably be my first choice, not the most efffective choice, eh Carolyn!)

Crabby, yeah I remember last year gnawing on a couple of those milky way's thinking, hey! not so bad. But Last time I did the freezer thing, it was a different freezer. So I think I'm secretly hoping this year will be different too.

I do the freezer thing too. Unfortunately, I think I will be freezing alot. I bought waaaayyy too many candy bars at the grocery store. That's what I get for going when I was starving. klol

Oh - thanks for posting! I told my boyfriend to get some candy that we don't liek, so we won't eat it. He said, "you just need to have willpower."

Oh - is that it dear? SHEESH

Thanks for a good reminder . . . it can be easy to slip in a few Halloween candies without really thinking about it.

And I loved frozen chocolate candies as a kid, so I would've thought you're an awesome mom! :) (And I do think you're a good mom now for putting them away the day after, too.)

i had no idea that candy corns were only 140 calories for 22.

i was feeling so guilty for chomping down less than 10 of them last night!!!

Oh they all look so innocent there when you're talking 1 serving. The problem is I'm likely to eat the Reese cups, the licorice and the milky ways. I'm buying something I don't like much to give away. I hope that works. It will still be candy though...

anne: I KNOW. Being hungry at the grocery store never leads to good things! Good luck!

p.o.m. Here is a big fat *eye-roll* for the Captain. Why tap willpower if you don't need to?

moSmo, me too!

Thanks Sally, we'll see how it goes! I just have to keep telling myself, "Frozen candy is gross!" over and over again! lol...

eurydice, less than 10? You are superwoman! My problem with candy corn is that I grab a big handful of like 28 or so, and think to myself "oh yeah, that looks like about 7."

Randi, Amen. 1 serving sure isn't going to kill you, but I'm the same. i rarely stop at 1. Although even 1 a day adds up and makes it that much harder to actually maintain rather than lose.

I am planning a trip to See's Candy to pick up my favorite treat - a dark chocolate sucker! They last a LONG time and I figure I can get through all of the trick-or-treaters without indulging if I just keep that sucker in my mouth! They have three other flavors - Carmel, Mocha, Dark Chocolate and another flavor I can't remember.
This will be especially important for me since I got six bags of FREE mini candy bars at Kmart on their coupon. I am smart though and took all the candy out and hid it in the shed so by dear husband wouldn't eat it all.

I also buy candy to give out that I personally don't care for...hmmm maybe that explains the toilet papering job our shrubs got last Halloween ;) Some of those kids looked very miffed to be getting lollipops, fireballs and smarties...

Kallunkimom, a dark chocolate sucker? GENIUS!!
Having something yummy to occupy your mouth for such a long time is such a great idea!

Hiding candy in the shed? also a good idea. (Although I wouldn't want to be the one caught in the middle of the night sneaking through the backyard...heh heh)

And Crabapple. Fireballs and smarties!! Those might just top the list of not-so-great Halloween candy. Very good idea! We used to give out dimes and nickels for Halloween and never got Tp'd. Go figure.

lol.. I love fireballs and smarties!

fyi... the mini twix are only 80 calories apiece... I should know... I've eaten the whole bag!

Mommy Donna said...

I like your idea! Like the other gals, I only buy Halloween candy that I don't actually like. Otherwise, since I have zero self-control, I'd eat all of it!

Here's a BLAST from the PAST: We're giving quarters out this year. (I'm hoping we don't get Tp'd)

I just can't deal with the war that would surely take place inside of me the days following Halloween.

becca said...

These comments are hysterical. Quarters? For real? haha.

My husband works for a candy company. They had a super sale on candy this week. It's been a bit of a problem for me -- the candy bags are ALREADY open, and it's not Halloween yet.

I'll have to dump them all in a big bowl and leave them outside my door with a sign "Just take one. Or lots."
Didn't you live for houses like that when you were a kid?

katieo said...

Mrs. Furious, You LOVE fireballs and smarties??? wow.
As for the twix, that's ok. I've seen your workout plan...

Mommy Donna, I followed everyone's lead and did the same thing last night! woo-hoo!

mom, Quarters? wow! :) You're really stepping it up this year! And now I will look at any spare change my boys happen to receive tonight and think, "there is a woman who want's to lose weight!"

becca, YES for real!! (and yeah, I used to LOOOOOVE those houses that'd just have a bowl out...) I wish we were going trick or treating with you this year!
