(Also known as :
Tuna, Why do I always forget you? -or-
Why Mothers Get Fat -or-
Most Massive Picture Post in the History of Blogdom)
Over the weekend I woke up and realized I was just eating too much and lots of the wrong food, (plus a lot of the right foods). It's not like I binged or even had a big "weak" moment. I just started to notice how much I was pick pick picking...at EVERYTHING. So for my own amusement, as previously metioned, I thought I'd just keep the camera handy and take a picture whenever I had the urge to just "pop" something in my mouth. Whether planned and at mealtime, or cleaning up the food off of the baby's high chair: *click!*
(Warning: Blogger is being flaky, perhaps due to my photo overload. Some pictures may not show up)
Ready, Set, Breakfasttime!
(I didn't get a picture of the Organic Raisin Bran I had for breakfast)
Here's the only thing I actually ate when I got home from the gym: (ahem. Not the baby)But these things were tempting:
Hello graham crackers...sitting out of the cupboard...AND package.
Open containers, we won't even go there.
I was just about to pop that handful of raisins back before I grabbed the camera. Now I know, they're just raisins. But it adds up people! And now on to Lunchtime. Absolutely the hardest time for me. It is impossible to make myself a healthy lunch amidst trying to feed the 3 little buggers (ages 5 , 3, and 1) It is also very RARE that I eat before they do. Which I think would be ideal considering it might cut back my appetite; instead I stand semi-hungry over this:
And am constantly running into little bits of things that seem to be magnetized to my tongue. I mean really, how else am I supposed to explain wanting to EAT any of this?
More little bits. Peach skins:
And here's the rest of a string cheese stick I broke into little bits for the youngling. How hard should it be to throw a two inch piece of cheese in the trash. Very hard apparently.
Ah, leftover kid-chewed Dino Buddies, my faaaaavorite!Ooooh, This one was hard. This little eentsy bit of english muffin (for the youngling) broke off when I was getting it out of the toaster.
Did eat any of it? Not today my friend. Here is a picture of my REAL lunch after the kidlets are settled and noshing away. It's english muffin topped with hummus and sliced tomato. It was deelish. (And no it's not a whole wheat one, ours here are Gross and actually contain more calories. I don't care if it's healthier, I'm not spending extra calories on whole wheat anything)
With lunch over, the rest of the day went OK. I had some close calls with some Ritz, a misplaced (and thankfully) frozen brownie in the freezer, some bread the youngling was snacking on, and of course the graham crackers. How many times do I have to put those things away??
Here's my afternoon meal, Tuna n'tomato toast on whole wheat bread. I heart tuna! And I always forget about it. Protein, low calories, tasty.
Tuna, forgive me.
And yes I actually ate raw broccoli. Don't panic, there's a bowl of ranch you can't see in this picture. (yesss, low-cal) The fiber one bar I had around 4:30 and my din-din: Spaghetti, meatballs and peas. Wow. Did you actually get all the way through that? So this was an eye opener for me. I just didn't realize how MUCH I had been nickel and diming my calories away.
I almost forgot, I don't think I would've made it through some of those rough spots (like making dinner) without my trusty repellent, Extra Polar Ice Gum.
So there you go! Are you appalled? Do you relate? Are you a food diary nazi? If not, how do check yourself?

Haha! I'm First!
Nice work, Katieo! Your real meals all look so well-rounded and appetizing. With meals like that, I would pass up the graham crackers and peanut butter, too. But my spaghetti never looks that yummy-ish, full of luscious tomato chunks.
I'm going to work harder tomorrow to make my meals more satisfying. I think I had crusts for lunch.
Ahhhh through the eyes of a mom. I too shall face those extra challenges one day. I have to say I really enjoyed this post. Your regular meals looked yumm-o!! Just so you know, I would have shoved that left over cheese in my mouth!! I never buy string cheese, but when it's around ...watch out! :D
Wow, it is like taking photos of my day too! I can relate totally. After doing the other photo challenge and with advent of the digital camera, I too thought this would be a great idea. You really have to look at what you are shoving in your mouth.
How tough it must be to be a Mom and restrain yourself from eating all the leftovers! I'm a big person for never leaving anything on the plate. Luckily my hubby will eat everything in site so he is usually finished eating before me and then starts to pick at my food too so I never even get a chance to eat any leftovers. What a challenge you have!
Kudos to you for resisting when you can! Those chicken nuggets look yummy!!!
Nice post! It made me think about the things I grab and don't count. Thanks!!!
Katie, have you heard of this site?
http://caloriecount.about.com/
It's a really great resource for keeping track of your weight, calories, and activities. The calorie counter has almost every food in it, and it it doesn't have what you want, you can enter in the nutrition information yourself. I lost about 5 lbs just counting calories when I started using it. It has really helped me modify my eating habits, and I'm down 15 with calorie counting and exercise.
Hope it helps!
Love this post. I like the fact that you're keepin' it real. It's hard when you have kiddos not to finish what's on their plate. For me I try to limit myself to his leftover fruit only (my son eats the entire cheese stick. I think he's part mouse). I used to keep a food journal and even if I didn't write down cals or WW points I still lost weight or kept it off. Then I quit and the weight crept on. I've been off the wagon a few weeks due to some "things" going on but I'm ready to get back on and keep a food journal again. Yay! Thanks for the motivation. BTW I know it's not Friday yet, but I lost 2 lbs over the last week! Whooppee!!!!
Excellent post! Well, first of all, you have ADORABLE children! My goodness; they are too cute for their own good!
Gosh, Katie, you are doing a great job. I'd be as big as a house if I were you. I'm so impressed. Keep up the good work.
remind me not to check in here when i'm hungry - GAH! yummy food everywhere...
now i want a cheese string...and a tomato.
and a baby.
wtf?
awesome post! love the pics! i sooo have the same problem with open containers and any sort of food that's just left out in the open. nice way of keeping track of it all! oh, and your food looks pretty! (the stuff you made for you...not so much the half chewed dinos...ha)
LOL... great post! I did catch myself eating a cherrio I found on the floor yesterday and thought "seriously Mrs F? You are eating a cherrio your baby spit out and threw on the floor?!?" It wasn't even a conscious thing just ..oh that's food.... put it in your mouth...automatic response.
And Dino Bites are delicious :)
ooooh, this is eye opening! I should do this for myself.
Way to go to keep your eyes open, dahling!
You never cease to crack me up! :) If only I could like the taste of tomatoes!
I can be a human disposal too, so I can really appreciate the great job you did in avoiding those extra calories.
Weight Watchers CORE works really well for me right now (42lbs off - maintaining since Jan). I have no innate self-control, so when I have a sugar hangover from the birthday cupcakes last week (which means I CRAVE butter and sugar and refined carbs for a week after eating one cupcake for each kid's birthday) - I really concentrate on the healthy guidelines and focus on snack rules. If I was winging it and just tried to eat healthier without some sort of rules, I personally would fail. I can't journal obsessively, but if I'm going off the rails a bit - I log food for a day or so.
Thanks for mentioning the graham crackers - I keep mine in a glass cookie jar on my counter and couldn't figure out why I've been craving them - I realized with your post that I didn't replace the parchment liner that kept me from constantly looking at them.
...And the tomatoes and hummus (yum). Throwing a couple of banana peppers in there will make your eyes roll into the back of your head.
Oh boy, do I remember those days. Luckily for me, my kids liked stuff that I don't, like peanut butter and Kraft dinner.
I've not been by for a while, it's nice to be back reading your blog. I'm working with WW to lose 15 to 20 pounds that have creeped up over the past few years. Now that I'm alone in the house all day (I work from home), the kitchen can be tempting, but I'm fighting it. :-)
I am now terrified of having children because of all the odd bits of things I might eat.
Ayie! Eye opener, so thank you. But scary!
you guys are hilraious! I am already having tastes of my baby's food and it's just mush! I really am a fan of the sweet potatoes and she isn't, so it works out.
thanks for introdusing e to the site.
-breena :)
I totally relate. When I'm at home, I stand infront the pantry/fridge at least twice per hour. My boyfriend calls me the "viddler." I don't know what that means. At work, there are always crappy snackies - i will pick up a half-eaten muffin or cookie or cake or anythign! It's embarassing to admit. Maybe I should take photos of it too.
I love it. If i had kids I would be so screwed with all the munching and extra meal prep...
Your choices are healthy though WTG! Now that the marathon is (finally) over, I'm looking forward to getting back on track with my eating!
~jess
It's all the baby's fault! (Funny, he doesn't really look that evil...) It's all part of his evil little plan to break you down and overpower you in some sort of bloodless coup. (Ah, just look at that sweet little face.)
Oh, nevermind...
...
Wow. . .did you take your pictures in my kitchen? I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is tempted by peach skin bits, cheese bits and graham crackers!!! All those little bites over the day do add up. . I need to keep reminding myself of that. Love your blog!
I love the pic of the high-chair tray! Funny!
I don't have kids, but you've done a good job of explaining your pain. It would be hard to be around all those little leftover tidbits of food! Good job for sticking to the veggies and tuna! ;)
Holy Cow! Lovin all these comments. I was going to come by and say "Oh let's make it a group thank you day," but I can't! Too many things I want to respond to!
I'll be back in a minute...
ok , more like 20 minutes...
becca, I have to admit, I did put a little more effort into my meals knowing I would be sharing them with the world. I have done crusts for lunch WAY too many times! lol!
Sarah, thanks. I thought of you when I took those pictures! :)
Samantha, Do it! I'd love to see you what passed up.
Carolyn, Send your hubby over here to finish off my kids plates.
hey Bri, Yeah, it's kind of funny what we tell ourselves as we're putting something in our mouth that's not "accounted for."
Xena, I hadn't seen that website before, but have seen some just like it. I think Sparkpeople has something like that too. and 5 pounds just from calorie counting? awesome! For me exact calorie tracking is good for a booster but not something I tend to stick with long term. But anything to get your mind thinking about what you're actually putting in your mouth would be useful!
Amber, CONGRATS! 2 pounds is fab! Gald to see you again! (and hoping those "things" get resolved in a good way :)
sbg, Thanks. Anyone who says my children are adorable is a friend of mine.
Marie. oh you crack me up. Sorry again food photos. String cheese, tomatoes and babies. I totally see the connection there.
be right back...
lacy, Do it! I'd love to see your pics.
Janae, Yeah, I didn't realize that all three of my real meals featured tomatoes.
meg, it was actually a lot harder than I thought it'd be. Half the time I was running around going, "now where did I put that camera?" I guess I didn't realize how often the thought actually happened.
Amy, CORE as in HARDCORE! 42 lbs since Jan? that's awesome! And that is a great point about the cravings. I never think of that after the fact. And Molly loves WW, it's just not something I can see myself doing longterm. But I know it works for many many people. I did BFL awhile ago and use kind of a modified version of that.
Mrs. F, "automatic response" Ah! I totally hear you, It's SO hard to change!
Marijke, "My kids liked stuff that I don't, like peanut butter and Kraft dinner." This is where we differ. I love PB, and while I'm not crazy about Kraft mac n'cheese I always seem to eat it. And as hard as it is with the wee ones, I think I'd gain 50 pounds if I were home alone all day! It's just a different beast.
Glad you came by again! :) Keep us updated with the weight loss.
Salma, "I am now terrified of having children because of all the odd bits of things I might eat." lol, be afraid. Be very afraid.
beans, baby food sweet potatoes are waaay to yummy!
p.o.m., take those pictures!, And I've never heard of "viddler" either, but it totally made me laugh.
Jessica, (hey any of you who have actually gotten down this far, Jessica just recently finished a MARATHON!!!! WOO-HOOO!!!!) Thanks lady! If you had kids I have a feeling they'd all be chompin on rice and veggies!
mother smuckers, LOL! Evil I tell ya!! It's not just the baby though..."Boys! Why do have have to leave those yummy crusts on your plates!?"
Hey Shelly, thanks for stopping by! And yes. they were taken in your kitchen. You have a very cute baby. :)
Thanks Taryn! Now if I could only stick to the veggies and tuna tomorrow too. :) thanks for coming by !
OK - that is my problem! I eat my kids' leftover food. Which means a whole meal with my girl. Dino buddies are probably my biggest downfall - that and licking the peanut butter knife.
You're visual presentation was so interesting!
I can relate to taking in little bits at a time throughout the day... which can tear down your "good" efforts the rest of the day. I work at a restaurant-- which makes it real easy to "pick".
You've inspired me to use my camera to help me watch what I eat. Tomorrow I'll take a picture of all food that comes across my path, too. We'll see how it goes.
Thanks for your post!
