The Open Package

My demise.

I'm pretty sure a handful of mini-marshmellows does not qualify as a healthy snack. But I've noticed recently my need to mindlessly sample everything before putting it away. Maybe I feel like I'm reaching in a goody bag for a prize.

KATIE: Hate to break it to you, the prize is ALWAYS going to be extra calories.

Gotta get back on track with my eating. With my mind so focused on other important stuff, grazing has become the norm - I don't even realize I'm doing it. I'm thinking that putting a little more effort into making healthier choices might even help me to feel better and more capable to handle everything. We'll see.

(P.s. And Mol, I'm not so sure a huge box of Fiber One's are very effective over here. Because when I open my cupboard several times a day and see this:

Well, that little black space is just calling to me...or my hand rather... it seems to have a mind of it's own. Because who, using their own brain, would have more than 2 of those fiberlicious things a day?)

I have the same weakness!

And there is now a Trader Joe's a few blocks from us--they're a great source of "almost healthy" snacks. In moderation, these would be great.

But dark chocolate covered almonds and Moderation? I seem to be having trouble putting those two concepts together!

Clearly you're just checking for poison. You're not a sidetracked dieter--you're a concerned mother, protecting her family from tainted food!

good comments!
So, I have these really pleasant-looking clothespins from IKEA (they're orange or blue or clear) and it's actually really satistfying to clip those bags closed. If I clip everything closed with a cute clothespin, it's much easier to open the cupboard and NOT eat everything in sight!
ummm, I sound a bit pathetic. too bad!

i totally have the same problem...if there is an open box of cereal anywhere in sight, my arm just reaches in there and goes straight to my mouth before it even registers that i'm eating! and the fiber 1 bars? yea, don't get me started. why did they have to make those things Sooooo good? like better than a candy bar good...

Mmm Fiber one bars...i can't believe you can eat more than 1 a day. I did that once and my stomach blew up! I was so bloated I could barely stand!
I have been munching myself a little too much and it needs to stop!!

Yea, I have to say, although it may be kinda gross...fiber one bars give me gas something awful. I thought it was just me, til the check out girl commented upon seeing them in my grocery cart about how gassy they make her. Though we both agreed they taste like candy. Especially PB flavor. BTW I can handle other fiber bars, it's just these that make me gassy. I still eat them, but not before going to a movie :)

Crabby, I want Trader Joe's! Dark chocolate almonds sound perfect.

Violet. Right! Although, somehow I don't have a problem "testing" broccoli or spinach.

marie. lol! Sometimes I actually think, "oh I better eat this so it's not sitting around tempting me." HELLO!

Becca, Cute clothespins on my list. Trip to IKEA is in order.

Meg, YES!! WHy do they make those things so tasty? I don't feel "healthy" at ALL when I eat them.

Hi Carolyn, So you'd think the "gas" situation would be enough of a deterrant, but no. But it does sound like even my worst case wasn't as bad as you after eating 2.

anonymous, lol! Yeah. Smart of you to remember before you go somewhere in closed quarters with crowds of people. And I don't think I'll be trying the PB flavor. I don't even know if I'll replace my current box when it's out!

yikes,
i told my friend about the fiber one bars, and she went and got a box of 5. she didn't really think about why they were called "fiber one"--ahem, they're full of fiber (and we all know what that does), so you can only have ONE. needless to say, she liked them so much she ate the whole box in one day, and was up all night on the toilet... i don't think she's going to take snack advice from me ever again :o)

Karen, I loved reading that. THe WHOLE entire box? OUCH!! Oh, I am still chuckling...

lacy. Argh. I know. We're having issues. I have tried so many different things. they get up, show up and then the next day they're gone. We're workin on it.

I was having a problem with snacks (WW one pt cakes, mini marshmallows, soy chips, etc.). Each time I opened the pantry, they were literally right in my face. I've moved all of my grains to that shelf and I hide the snacks on high pantry shelves (I'm pretty short)or in our low cereal cabinet. I even placed them so I can't see the labels so well and have to make a real conscious decision to get them. My mom used to keep snacks in a large potato chip can in the bottom of her pantry. They were such a pain to get out that we usually changed our minds before we ate them.
I used to sample while I prepared breakfast and dinner too. Now I chew gum while I'm cooking - I've actually floored myself with the realization, "I'M NOT EATING?!"
