My goal for last week was to "tighten" up my eating and so continuing this week I'm going to try to plan ahead a little better. A quick peruse through my fridge and I realized I'm out of most of my favorite healthy snacks, well DUH. No wonder I had a run-in with those graham crackers.
Here are a couple of snacks I need to get back into rotation:
Grapefruit and cottage cheese
Pineapple and cottage cheese
Pita chips (handful or so) and hummus
Apple and peanut butter
Tuna on whole wheat Ritz (and yes, I'm fully aware that "whole wheat" doesn't mean a whole lot in this case...I just like the flavor better)
Nonfat yogurt and hardboiled eggs
Egg salad on 100% whole wheat toast (a little low fat Miracle Whip or Mayo goes a long way)
Ready to grab carrots and red peppers. (Not a celery fan, too stringy)
Avocado spread on whole wheat english muffin (thanks Sarah)
ZonePerfect Bars (Sparingly. Don't worry, I know they've got sugar and fat. But they're an easy source of protein. Love 'em! And only 210 calories)
And my FAVORITE (especially when I need to feel really full):
100% whole wheat toast spread with peanut butter and sliced banana..topped off with a small glass of milk.
What are your staples? Better yet, what do you find yourself snacking on when you're low on the healthy stuff? We don't keep very much junk around the house, but I've been known to get creative.
(And, on an unrelated note, if any of you have experience with nighttime eating and working the night shift, go on down to the end of the comment section of Eating Before Bed? and share your wisdom)

My #1 snack staple is popcorn. I used to just eat microwave popcorn (the 94% ff kind, I think, is really good and with sprayed with a little bit of butter spray and a few shakes of salt, definitely hit the salty spot -- or if the sweet spot needed to be hit, kettle corn was great).
I finally bought a popcorn popper - the West Bend Stir Crazy popcorn popper, and that is my snack almost every single day. I use 1 tsp of EVOO, 1/3 cup of kernels, and pop away. It is SO good, SO filling, SO healthy, and has SO much fiber!
I seriously crave it...
Redenbacher's Caramel Popcorn cakes
A big organic Fuji apple
Ritz + peanut butter
Dreyer's fruit popsicles
100-cal granola bar
light Pringles
Pita chips + a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese (light!)
the list goes on and on... I love snacks.
Good Morning Ladies!
I'm a big snacker. And I'm all about quick & easy. My ideas are NOT original...but I do know for snacks you need to make them a "good" carb & a protein.
For instance...today I brought lowfat string cheese & grapes for my snacks. Some times I bring a piece of whole wheat, low sugar bread w/ 1 tbs p butter. If I am at home, I really like apples & natural peanut butter, but that's too much trouble (to me) to mess with at work:) If I'm in a pinch, I will do a 140 calorie South Beach bar (I try not to do those too often though) I personally try to keep my snacks around 150 cals.
Lorie
You do not eat hard boiled eggs WITH yogurt do you? Eww...
My snack of choice lately is a MEASURED AMOUNT of trail mix. It just keeps me full for so much longer. Of course when I'm just feeling munchy I'm trying to stick to watermelon or other water filled fruits.
That toast with pb and bananas (and did you ever sprinkle with cinnamon, try it) is my favorite all time breakfast. It feels like a treat.
i am with you, i definitely need to eat more fruits/veggies and lean proteins for snacks. i'm so used to 100 calorie packs and snack bars, and basically processed food. i need to cut some of it out.
Oooh thanks for the cottage cheese reminder! Guess what I'm getting tonight? :)
Jessica,
Just put popcorn on the list. THanks!
c,
Caramel Popcorn Cakes? I'm curious. And Ritz with peanut butter! WHy didn't I think of that? loL!
Hi Lorie! Thanks for the suggestions- I'm with you: "Quick and easy" is king.
Randi, NO, I do NOT mix eggs and yogur. lol! And I love that you love PB+bananas on toast- I will definitely try cinnamon on top.
Kelly, I know what you mean. It seems like the past couple of days I've just been grabbing Zone Bars over and over.
Anne, your welcome. Happy cottage cheesing.
I love the Light n Fit yogurt smoothies by Dannon (i think?). They only have 60 calories, although I usually use them as breakfast instead of just a snack. You can usually get four of them for 2-3 dollars.
if you have a trader joes nearby, get their packaged almonds--it's a big bag with individual serving-sized packets of raw, unsalted almonds inside. i grab one of these in the morning, stick it in my purse and pull it out when i'm running errands and see something that looks more enticing but not near as healthy :o)
if you don't have a trader joes, you can make your own--i believe it's about 12-15 almonds. you can get cans of raw, unsalted almonds at Target Greatland. they're my favorite!
Hello! I'm a daily reader who's never commented before, but I wanted to share some of my great snack ideas, too!
One of my favorite breakfasty snacks is a whole wheat toaster waffle (Kashi makes a great one) with cottage cheese piled on top (sounds weird, but TRUST me...). Peanut butter does a lovely job as well! Also, try scooping some cottage cheese onto a warm and toasty whole wheat english muffin. A great way to sneak in some fiber and A LOT protein without investing many calories... Delish!
Karen, Thanks! No Trader Joes around here, but I especially appreciate your alternative. :)
Jessica, Welcome!
I have to say-cottage cheese? On the waffle? Interesting theory...and you say it tastes good? If I'm brave this week, I'll give it a try. I'm always up for a new suggestion...
Wow, what a great list of snacks!
Katieo, yours were awesome and there are even more good ideas down here.
Most of mine are already on here. Lately I've been doing a version of Karen's--dry roasted unsalted almonds. (Though I can't do 'em raw, and I also sprinkle on some Lite Salt, which at least has potassium as well as sodium.)
Something about nuts seems to satisfy the same "cravy" hunger that that empty Carbs do--they're a good substitute for me for chips or pretzels.
Crabby, YAY! You're back! The world of blogging just wasn't the same without you!
And I will definitely try the nuts thing. Normally the only nuts I like are cashews (the fattiest ones- heh), but I'll give almonds a try this week.
Now I'm hungry :)
My fave healthy snacks are:
-homemade pita chips and hummus/salsa fat free sour cream
-airpopped corn
-carrots
-ice, skim milk and strawberries blended up with a banana...yum
-ryvita spread with fat free cream cheese and sliced fruit
-I've started making my own granola bars too...I know what's in them and can cut them to my size...
Yum! I'm heading to Trader Joe's later today -- I'll just print this off for a shopping list, thank you. And my all time favorite food, as you probably know, is a Stoneyfield Farms Organic Smoothie. Can't live without 'em. You can get them at Target or Costco (and I'm a bit snobbish about accepting NO substitutes). I tried to get my husband to work for Stoneyfield Farms. Too bad it didn't pan out . . .
Sorry Jen, looks like I missed you! Thanks for the Dannon tip. I'm not a big fan of the yogurt smoothie, EXCEPT for the yoplait brand. But yowser! 60 calories, I'm totally looking for them! And the yoplait's are kinda pricey too, 1.19 ea. last time I checked.
Hi Geosomin!, Love your list.
I'm definitlely adding the smoothie-ish sounding one to my list. Somehow I always forget about it when I'm thinking about snack time.
I used to make my own granola bars too. I tried to convince the kids they were "special" cookies.
It didn't go over too well.
...oh and call me clueless, but what is ryvita spread?
Becca, If your husband worked for Stonyfield farms, you wouldn't get all of the lovely perks you get now. Perks I'm glad I don't have. lol!
Apples, Dannan lite yogurt, Balance Bars...the usual. But my favorite is a gigantic bag of mini organic carrots from Costco. I don't know what it is about the organic ones, but they're waaaay sweeter than the regular ones I get at the store.
This mama cooks,
Thanks! I didn't know the organic carrots at Costco tasted sweeter...I'll give them a try!
Sometimes I crave something creamy and chocolaty so I have a fat free jello chocolate pudding cup and I add some ultra low fat cool whip on top. Tastes really yummy!
oh i just remembered--the big bags of sugar snap peas from costco! you can make ranch dressing out of fat-free plain yogurt and the little ranch packets in the salad dressing aisle. or just eat the peas plain--they're crunchy, so a great alternative to pretzels or chips, etc.
