This weekend, my family and I went to a little annual carnival our city puts on: Summerfest. Our plan was simple: see the real helicopter up close, 3 kiddie rides (being that we have little kiddies), then get a small treat to make them want to get OFF of the rides. So, after the little boats, cars, and motorcyles, we headed over to the food vendors. It was not long before I saw them. Those old men from the Kiwanis club running the SCONE tent.
Oh sure, they look harmless enough. They lure you in with their gentle friendly demeanor. The closer I got to the tent, I started to think, "Grandpa, is that you?"
Once they've got you they show no mercy. They pull out all the stops with lines like: "Hi. Would you like a scone?" and "How 'bout some honeybutter?"
I thought I learned my lesson last year. We walked away from the scone shack with two of these:
As far as calories go, I don't even want to know. I DO know I wasn't hungry the rest of the day. Oy. I think the only way I'd ever NOT have one at Summerfest is by staying home. And since I'm not keeping the kidlets away from their beloved 75 cent ride once-a-year-thrill, I'm just going to have to be ok with that.

Ah! Scones, scones, scones. SCONES!
Those guys look so sweet and innocent too!
I'd have totally gone for it. I'd need to have some really good jam with it though.
Well, and a glass of milk. Crap. I'd have like eaten 1100 calories by the time I was done, and I still be hungry for the next meal.
God I'm so glad we don't have a stand like that where I live, I'd be doomed!
Scones use to be a weakness of mine. Especially with raspberry butter. Aye Aye aye!!
LOL I have never had a scone in my life. It did look good, in fact it reminded me of what we call Elephant ears but those are usually huge deep fried pancakey things sprinkled with powdered sugar or cinnamon n sugar.
Katie: Thank you so much for the lovely comment on my blog and for the encouragement. MUCH appreciated!
Hugs, Mel
lol. those little grandpas will get ya!
you know what, for special occasions like that, you should indulge and have the scone. it's not like you do it everyday. and my sister and i always say when we eat something bad it probably just kick starts our metabolism. don't know if that's true but it makes me feel better haha :)
this summer i'm visiting my grandma & grandpa and i will be indulging in their irish potato pancakes, soda bread and of course, scones. i have to, it's part of the experience and i only see them once a year :)
Julia, I'm feeling your empathy fright through the screen!
Crabby, I hadn't even thought about scones with anything fruity like jam
and Sarah, be-still-my-heart RASPBERRY BUTTER? Oooo.
And mel, I think these are the same as elephant ears. As I recall they did sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on the top...
Kelly, I'm telling you, I would've bought a car from them! LOVE the kickstart metabolism thing. lol. I think that sounds perfect. And I do agree, it is part of the experience. You just gotta be ok, i think, with some of those high-calorie traditions. :) Thanks for the reminder!
